Mindfulness asks you to attend to the present moment without judgement. Mindlessness keeps the present and throws away the attending.
Set the direction deliberately. Then engage autopilot until you get there.
The practice itself is meant to be unattended, and that is the mechanism rather than a shortcut. The anti-reflection instruction is the pre-logic rule stated as practice: repetition is not an argument, which is why it can reach something that does not take arguments. Reflect on it and you convert it back into an argument, addressed to a part of you that cannot receive one.
Autopilot is what a system does with anything it has settled.
The Inner House. The mind is plural. Seven Residents, all present from birth, none acquired at any stage. Each has one question, and the question is the function.
| Resident | Question | States |
|---|---|---|
| Trust | Am I safe? | secure → uneasy → threatened |
| Autonomy | Do I choose this? | choosing → pressured → coerced |
| Initiative | What can I try? | exploring → hesitant → frozen |
| Industry | What must be done? | productive → struggling → stalled |
| Identity | Who am I? | clear → questioning → lost |
| Intimacy | Can I be truly seen? | open → guarded → hidden |
| Generativity | What am I building beyond myself? | creating → maintaining → depleted |
Every Resident is answered by doing. Not by deciding. Not by being told.
Direction is a pull you have now, not a goal ahead.
The Rhythms of existence — Meaning, Connection, Identity, Capacity — are readouts. Meaning reads Generativity, Connection reads Intimacy, Identity reads Identity. Capacity reads the whole house's expenditure, which is why no single Resident supplies it. The Residents come before the Rhythms, never the other way round. A Rhythm is the slow aggregate of whether a question has been getting answered. You cannot intervene on a readout — the work is always at the Residents.
The Anchors are four, and they split in a way that matters.
| Anchor | What it is | Needs a Resident online? |
|---|---|---|
| Structural | the world staying where you left it | no |
| Behavioural | your body — sleep, food, movement | no |
| Emotional | Intimacy — one person's presence | yes |
| Identity | Identity — I am someone who… | yes |
The top two still work when everything else has gone offline.
Ground Status — steady, shifting, collapsing — reads what you are standing on. It is not the same scale as a Resident's states, and not the same as the Anchor ratings. Three instruments, three different readings.
Articulation and the Rules — Boundary, Behavioural, Identity — are set out in full in the framework itself. To learn more about the Navigational Way, visit www.thenavigationalway.com.
The practice is built from six words, and the words are not the point. The qualities are.
| Quality | Word |
|---|---|
| Value | Good |
| Embodiment | Body |
| Agency | Move |
| Place | Here |
| Time | Now |
| Capacity | Can |
These six were not chosen. They emerged from a constrained sentence exercise built on the semantic primes — the small set of words that appear in every studied language and cannot be broken down any further. I didn't choose those words. The constraints chose them.
Capacity behaves differently from the other five, because its position decides what the sentence is.
Can good body move here now? — capacity uncertain, direction blocked
Good body can move here now. — capacity settled, direction set
Same six words. One is a question and the other is a direction. Nothing changed but where CAN stands.
Spoken Word + Action + Thoughts = Direction.
Intentional Direction is not found — it is produced by these three. This is to distinguish it from Direction as described in the canon, which requires no cognition.
| Factor | Nature | Controllable |
|---|---|---|
| Thoughts | gas — expands to fill the space, cannot be held | no |
| Actions | solid — weight and momentum; habits are solidified actions | moderately |
| Spoken Word | liquid — flows, adapts, needs no permission | most |
The Critical Mass Principle: when any two align, the third is pulled into line.
Thoughts are the one factor you cannot control — and the one you do not need. Two are enough.
You can say anything you want, right now, out loud. You don't have to believe it.
Why speech is the usable factor. Speech is a bodily action. It requires no meaning construction, no belief and no Resident online — the same property that lets the Behavioural Anchor keep working under load. Don't believe it, just say it works for the same structural reason that breathing and feet on the floor do.
The WILL loophole. A present-tense claim gets checked against how things actually are, and fails. I am confident — that is not true right now. WILL is not a claim about current reality, so there is nothing yet to check it against, and the comparison cannot run.
What WILL is. WILL is not one of the primes. CAN is a prime; WILL is a composite — MOVE + HERE. That makes the future not a time but a position you get to by moving. It is somewhere, not somewhen.
Which is exactly why the loophole works. A comparator holds what was said against what is actually arranged. It cannot check a here you have not moved to yet, because there is nothing arranged there.
And it is why a WILL statement is a promissory note. It names a position you do not yet occupy. Nothing can check it today. Something can check it later.
5a. The Process Method Chant
Now Good Body Can Move Here Now
Said continuously, the closing NOW and the opening NOW are both spoken:
now good body can move here now now good body can move here now now good body can move here…
Read the qualities off it: Time · Value · Embodiment · Capacity · Agency · Place · Time.
The chant cannot ask the question. Take every rotation of the cycle:
| Rotation | Reads as |
|---|---|
| now good body can move here now | a direction |
| good body can move here now now | a direction |
| body can move here now now good | a direction |
| can move here now now good body | a fragment |
| move here now now good body can | a direction |
| here now now good body can move | a direction |
| now now good body can move here | a direction |
An English question needs CAN immediately before the subject. In the cycle CAN is always followed by MOVE, and good body always precedes it, so that arrangement never occurs. However you enter the stream, capacity is settled. The rule does not have to be held in place — the loop holds it.
Why the doubled NOW may work better. Reflect on these, or discard them.
It goes from seven syllables to eight. Now·good·bo·dy·can·move·here is seven; the second NOW makes eight. Seven is prime and cannot divide, so the unit never settles against a steady pulse and the body must re-find the beat every turn. Eight divides into four and four. Sustained recitation across traditions runs in even counts.
The four-and-four break lands on the grammar. Now good bo-dy | can move here now. Everything before the break is who and when; everything after is what it can do. Rhythm and sentence agree instead of cutting across each other.
Each turn is a complete statement. Before, the sense needed the seam — you had to hear two turns to get one sentence. Now nothing is owed to the following cycle.
NOW NOW is a doubled pulse. The offglide of the diphthong runs straight into a nasal, so voicing never stops, but the repeated syllable makes the turn audible without a silence to mark it.
And the seam is Time upon Time. You leave one now and arrive at another, with nothing between them.
5b. The Navigation Loop Construction
The chant starts the engine. It does not steer. Steering is the full house, and every Resident gets a line.
This is the next step up from the Process Method Chant, taken when the person is ready for it. It follows the same Now Now format.
Now good body can be safe here now.
Now good body can choose here now.
Now good body can try here now.
Now good body can do here now.
Now good body can be someone here now.
Now good body can be seen here now.
Now good body can build beyond here now.
One line for each Resident, and the verb is what answers it: be safe — Trust · choose — Autonomy · try — Initiative · do — Industry · be someone — Identity · be seen — Intimacy · build beyond — Generativity.
Every line closes on NOW and the next opens on NOW, so the doubled pulse falls at each Resident boundary. The seventh runs back into the first, and it turns.
Nothing is added. The seven lines are complete as they stand.
Spiral Repetition mirrors the Navigation Loop, as a spiral returns you to the same heading at a new position — saying it changed something.
Everything here runs on repetition. Both articulations are repeated. The Loop Construction is not said once and the chant is not said once — neither is a statement you make, both are something you run.
The dose and the daily sequence are decided by the person, or by the person and their therapist, and adjusted to their capacity. There is no prescribed number in this manual, and there should not be. What one person can carry is not what another can, and what someone can carry this week is not what they could carry last week.
The sequence:
1. Say the Loop lines, with your values in them.
2. Run the chant.
3. Do not review it. Do not check whether it is working. Do not rate your mood.
Set direction. Engage autopilot.
It does not treat anything. It starts an engine. The healing, if that word applies, is the house answering its own questions by doing — which it was always going to have to do. The words make doing possible when there is nothing left to spend, because they cost nothing.
It is not a substitute for care, and it is at its most dangerous at the moment it looks most useful. A self-administered practice, at high dose, delivered without clinical contact at exactly the point where contact matters most. If things are bad, this goes alongside a person, not instead of one.
The evidence is thin and I will not dress it up. The breathing rate and the loss of meaning under repetition are real and well established. Everything else — the grammar, the position of CAN, the difference between a directional articulation and an empty one — has never been tested by anyone. It is a mechanism with a prediction, not a finding.
And there is a case it is wrong for. If someone is stalled — the machinery running with nothing to calculate from — a small step is exactly right and will work. If someone is spent, striking sparks into an empty tank does nothing, and each failed attempt adds to the load. The words are safe in both.
